Placenta Encapsulation? A Scientific Revelation!

What hormones are produced by the placenta at term and which physiologic function do they have? What is the effect of these hormones in the postpartum period? In this session, we are going to look at oxytocin, human placental lactogen, estrogen, progesterone and other hormones in detail. How does steaming and dehydrating placental tissue influence the concentration of these small peptide and steroid hormones? Are toxic elements found in placental tissue and if so, do they accumulate during preparation? What microbial species are found in placental tissue and what effect does steaming have on the number of germs detected? Potential risks and benefits of placentophagy are discussed and the latest, not yet published data, from the Jena University Placenta Lab in Jena, Germany will be presented.

Placenta as a Galactogogue: Tradition or Trend?

For some mothers, insufficient milk supply impacts their ability to fully breastfeed their infants. Many of these mothers seek holistic options to increase their milk supply. Amongst some women, placenta medicine and/or postpartum placenta consumption as a purported galactagogue is a practice on the rise. There is some limited historical research, and more recently some phenomenological data, about the practice of placenta as a galactagogue. However little is truly known about the benefits and risks of placentophagy. Even less is known about whether or not placenta can be viewed as a galactagogue. This presentation aims to review the existing literature and purpose a further call for research in regards to placenta as a galactagogue.

Lyme Disease and Co-infections: A Primer for the Birth Practitioner

Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in the Northern Hemisphere and Europe, as well as an emerging disease in Australia. If untreated, it can contribute to multisystemic problems such as arthritis, carditis, and neurocognitive disorders. The bacterium which causes Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi, is in the same phyla (Spirochaeta) as syphilis. It has been demonstrated to cross the placenta and cause congenital transmission. Borrelia has been cultured from the breastmilk of untreated women and has also been cultured from the placenta, even in women treated with antibiotics during pregnancy. Because Borrelia is known to exist in multiple forms – biofilms, round-body (cyst), L-form, and blebs, as well as, its better-known spirochetal form – confirmation of eradication from the processed placenta presents challenges. This talk will explore Lyme Disease in general, gestational Lyme in particular, and will include the “knowns and unknowns” about Lyme Disease to guide practitioners in decision-making when faced with clients who present with Lyme during pregnancy.

Grief and Healing for Birth Workers

A course on the best way to emotionally support a mother if her baby dies before, during, or shortly after birth. Birth workers experience their fair share of highs and joys during their work. However, birth work is not always sunshine and roses. While many birth workers are trained for what if’s they usually aren’t properly prepared to deal with the personal emotions that can follow after going down those what if roads. Self-care and healing are somethings many birth workers tell clients is quite important, yet don’t always make time for themselves. Grief processing and healing is an important step in self-care, and easier to incorporate into life than one might think.

Navigating Placenta Release Policies in Clinical Settings

Placenta Release is not a standardized practice internationally, nationally, statewide, countywide, or even in the same city. This session will review some current release policies for different clinical settings, discuss barriers to more mother-friendly policies and how to help facilitate positive change in your area.

Breastfeeding and Underpinning Mental Health Factors that Affect Mothers

There is a consensus that “breast is best” in the medical community and research has shown overwhelming evidence to reinforce this statement. Lactation experts are also in agreement with this perspective. The role of any provider during the antepartum and postpartum period is to help support a mother to find effective coping skills in the early development of their newborn.

There are several variables that may present some difficulties based on the vulnerabilities of the newborn and the mother. In regards to mental health, complications during the postpartum experience, namely the lactation and breastfeeding process may impact a mother’s ability to experience success in lactation. The purpose of the presentation is to explore the relationship between breastfeeding, lactation and a mother’s mental health concerns.

Lecture objectives for the providers:

❖ The providers will obtain an overall understanding of the relationship between breastfeeding and mothers with mental health concerns.
❖ The providers will be able to identify women who may be at risk for postpartum depression and anxiety.
❖ The providers will review the benefits of breastfeeding for nursing mother and baby.
❖ The providers will be able to identify the mental health challenges of a nursing mother.
❖ The providers will obtain some coping skills to support a breastfeeding mother with mental health concerns.
❖ The providers will become knowledgeable about the most common psychiatric. medications that are readily used for mothers with mental health symptoms.
❖ The providers will be reinforced to continue to work with the mother to preserve the breastfeeding relationship whenever possible and to continue to show support if the mother is unable to maintain the breastfeeding relationship.

Grassroots Collaboration in an Unregulated Industry: The Evolution of Placenta Services Australia

Book Review: Placenta Wit, Nane Jordan

How can the amazing yet humble placenta inform conversations about birth practices, mother-centred wisdom in birth care, and larger social practices in general?

In North American contexts, placentas were and are often considered to be medical property, and/or viewed as the refuse of birth. Yet there is now greater understanding of mother- and baby- centered birth care in which careful treatment of the placenta and cord can play an integral role. In reclaiming birth at home and in clinical settings, mothers are choosing to keep their placentas. There is a revival, and survival, of family and community rituals with the placenta and umbilical cord, including burying, art making, and consuming for therapeutic use. Claiming and honoring the placenta may play a vital role in understanding the sacredness of birth and the gift of life that mothers bring.

The forthcoming publication “Placenta Wit,” includes understandings from birth cultures and communities such as home-birth, hospital-birth, midwifery, doula, Indigenous, and feminist perspectives. Nané will consider stories, rituals, and research from this edited anthology—sharing a taste of authors’ experiential, social science, scientific, literary, historical, legal, and economic lenses of storytelling and study to evoke how this wise organ sits at the roots of motherhood, and life itself.

Traditional Wisdom for the 4th Trimester

Along with a description of the Arvigo® Techniques and their application during the postpartum period, I explain the anatomy behind the wisdom of a long and well-supported lying-in after birth and delayed re-entry to “normal” life.

Amy has served as a midwife for the homebirth community in Boulder Colorado for more than 25 years.  She retired recently from birth work to expand her service in touch and teaching.  Her long-standing interest in traditional medicine and the connection of spirituality and healing brought her to the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy® years ago, and this is now her professional home.  She is a Certified Arvigo® Practitioner and teacher for the Arvigo® Institute. She travels all over the country, bringing these ancient traditions to new communities.

Plant Therapy – Essential Oils Safety in Postpartum

Essential Oils are talked about widely these days. Their use has become mainstream and pinterest is booming with memes and recipes for practically anything you can think of. Safety is unfortunately overlooked in many cases and unsafe or dangerous use suggestions can be found in many corners of the internet. Essential oil use around newborns and for a postpartum mom needs to be done with caution to balance the complementary options with safety. So have a listen to our interview with Leslie Moldenauer, CHNC, HHP, Cert. Aroma who is a consultant for the growing oil company Plant Therapy. We’ll be going over safety and use suggestions for postpartum moms, newborns, and a little on kids as well.
